Another institution that always includes digital signage in their events are United Nations. At their latest conference, taking place from December 7th to 18th in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the theme that occupies the attention of wide international public – Climate Change – UN chose Bella Center to be the congress center which will host the event.

As every other big event in UN organization, this one is having many simultaneous sessions/panels, on different subjects under the umbrella of the general theme. And these sessions are taking place in different conference rooms at Bella Center.

We can agree or not that this conference will be a significant step for the future of the Earth and mankind, but we can definitely agree that UN know how to give a modern, contemporary look to their events. Thumbs up for the organizer!

On November 1st, we broke the 1000 days until the Olympic games in London. For this occasion, a “giant electronic information band at the top of the iconic BT Tower in London. The 360 degree LED array was switched on for the first time this evening (31st October) with a pyrotechnic display and a message to celebrate 1000 days to go to the London 2012 Olympic Games”.

Last Friday, here in Zurich, we had a pleasure of taking part in the Night of the Research (Ger. Die Nacht der Forschung). This is one of those special events when the future of world’s science “shows off”, i mean – present their work. On unusually warm autumn evening, the visitors had a chance to take a glance at many of the research results that scientists from ETH, Zurich University, and Alstom prepared for sometimes pretty amateur and non-informed audience.

For me, the amount of displays used at this event was breath-taking! Under 19 tents, I’ve counted at least 80 screens (and I got distracted on couple occasions with the content displaying on them – so there might have been even more!).

Among other interesting things I saw there, guys from computing sciences captured the most affinity from the audience. They presented the software which was showing the content from 4 PC on 4 screens, that were placed as a video wall.

Next impressive thing was interactive relief of Switzerland, with a touch screen and many special effects.

And a robot relly, which I didn’t catch on the video for the history – but I managed to take a video of this magic balancing machine, which can take up to 1.3N of pressure and not fall!

Anyway, the night was great, to see and feel the science one-on-one was also great – and the number of screens, strategically placed all around was even better! Thumbs up for this digital signage, ooops, science event!

This morning, I made a visit to the road traffic licensing department, well known Strassenverkehrsamt, in Winterthur.

Two huge screens, on which were running all kinds of useful information, like parking ticket prices, different taxes and deadlines, were dominating the pretty empty hall. I haven’t seen advertising on them.

Actually, they didn’t help a lot, since they do not say which desk is doing what – so I had to stray a bit to find the proper place. Maybe they can use a tip or two about the content running on those screens…

The autumn semester is approaching, so I made a tour over my favourite bookstores. Next to the new colours in technical section, I was happy to see that they finally digitalized! A screen of the average size is presenting the top bestsellers, available software and latest tour guides.

Nice use of digital signage as information system.

The European volleyball championship for men is taking place these days in Turkey. The competition is held in two sport arenas – Halkapinar Sports Hall in Izmir (on the picture above) and Abdi Ipekci Arena in Istanbul (picture below).

And as we said in one of our previous posts – Dijital Iletisim are THE words in Turkey, we see the proofs for it on daily base.

We blogged already about Olympics, Universiade and we talk today about the third biggest sports event of the planet. It is Maccabiah, and is taking place every fourth year in Israel.

The second biggest sport venue on the planet – Universiade – is taking place this year from July 1st to 12th, in Belgrade, Serbia. The name of this event is a combination of “University” and “Olympiad”. Since we are talking about academic citizens, the creme de la creme of every society, I am not surprised at all to see the latest technology all around the University Village, where the future world’s opinion leaders are placed.
