Today is a very special and exciting day in the digital signage world with Screen Media India happening. India is the jewel in digital signage crown and everyone is keen to see what will eventuate in this land of massive potential with its 1.13 billion population.

We were lucky enough to catch Screen Events’ director Mark Pigou in between his very busy schedule. Screen Events is the organiser of Europe’s largest annual dedicated digital signage and digital media networks exhibition which just took part in London and on the back of the buzz about India have organised today’s show.
Minicom Blog: You must be very excited about Screen Media India?
Mark Pigou: Definitely. We are dipping our toes in India which is why it’s just a one day conference as opposed to a trade show. Notwithstanding it should be a fantastic event.
MB: There’s always a bit of uncertainty about first-time shows. How has this one been received?
MP: Very very well. We have 150 delegates and we’ve managed to put together a fantastic agenda. Importantly we have a strong presence from the local Indian market and while some of big names from overseas will be speaking, so too will a number from the local market. The media agencies have been very supportive and we have a good cross section of the industry here.
MB: How does this compare with what Screen Expo Europe?
MP: We are keen to explore the market which for the most part is a unknown quantity with huge potential. With the benefit of hindsight, one would hope they don’t make the mistakes they did in North America and Europe.
MB: What types of mistakes are you referring to?
MP: Not having a business plan and not dedicating enough resources to the content side of things.
MB: You’ve had a bit of time to reflect on the London show. How did it go?
MP: Very positive. We experienced great growth from 2007 and 44% of the visitors were overseas-based from 51 countries. We are looking forward to increasing that in 2009 to 60% and going even more global.
MB: Anything you would like to change for the 2009 show?
MP: We want to have more presentations and seminars so you can learn besides simply seeing. Additionally we are going to move to April as February is becoming a bit congested and cramped. Also we most probably will be having a Dubai show next year.
MB: Sounds fantastic. Good luck with it in India and thanks for talking to us.
MP: You’re welcome.
