CeBIT 2007

Today is opening day of CeBit 2007. For those of you who may be unware, CeBIT is the world’s largest convention for digital IT and telecommunications solutions.

It is held in Hanover, Germany and normally attracts something in the vicinty of half a million visitors.

CeBIT is an anagram for Centrum für Büro und Informationstechnik which is German for Center for Office and Information Technology.

For a long time, CeBIT was it, in terms of trade shows but it isn’t as potent as it used to be. Huge players such as Hewlett-Packard, Apples, Motorola, Nokia, Seiko Epson and Symantec are not going to be there.

One of the reasons for this is that CeBIT became a victim of its own success. When it started there was nothing else like it and that was all very exciting and innovative But seeing what a massive opportunity it was, copycat events which targeted specific audiences sprung up and with it, took some of CeBIT’s heat.

Not withstanding it still should be a fascinating showcase of the latest in the industry.
